Delivering Community Aquatic facilities across Tasmania

Collective has delivered structural and civil engineering for multiple aquatic centres across regional Tasmania. Projects include the Dorset Aquatic Centre (outdoor, completed 2018), the Oatlands Aquatic Centre (indoor 25-metre and children's pools, completed 2022), the Central Coast Council Aquatic Centre (2016–2017), and structural investigations at Cressy Swimming Pool (2018).

Each facility serves its local council's goal of providing safe, durable community recreation. Collective involvement spans every phase, from return brief and concept design through detailed documentation, contract administration, and construction support.

Engineering Challenges

  • Corrosive Aquatic Environment: Pools are subject buildings to aggressive wetting-and-drying cycles. All structural elements require careful material selection, protective coatings, and detailing to achieve the durability expected of a 50 year public asset.
  • Waterproof Pool Shell Design: In-situ concrete pool shells act as the primary waterproofing barrier. Heavy reinforcement controls cracking, while specialised low-shrinkage concrete mixes and surface treatment systems are specified before tiled finishes are applied.
  • Thermal Separation and Condensation: Tasmania's cool climate demands effective isolation between warm, humid pool halls and cold external conditions. Dual-layer structures with HDPE or polymer thermal breaks, isolation joints, and advanced cladding systems manage condensation and energy performance.
  • Foundation and Settlement Control: Pool shells are structurally independent from the main superstructure. Strict settlement limits often require pier designs connected to rock, ensuring long-term performance under hydrostatic loads and groundwater pressure.
  • Construction Sequencing: Large monolithic pool shell pours must avoid cold joints. Close coordination with contractors determines optimal staging, erecting roofs in summer and pouring shells in winter, or vice versa — to manage weather risk and construction quality.

Integrated Structure & Civil Design

Superstructures are designed for dead, live, wind, and earthquake loads, with snow loading considered at higher Tasmanian elevations. Both timber and structural steel framing have been successfully used, each with meticulous protective coating systems appropriate to the aquatic environment.

Civil works include site drainage, car parking, and coordination with pool plant engineers on balanced-tank processing systems and hydrostatic valve drainage. Heightened specifications and supervision levels ensure construction quality meets the demanding standards of aquatic facilities.

Specialist Pool Shell Expertise

Collective experience extends beyond public aquatic centres to residential pools using reinforced masonry, in-situ concrete, spraycrete, fibreglass shells, and structural steel systems. This breadth of pool design, from council facilities to private residences, gives the team a deep understanding of working with pool suppliers, installers, and process engineers.

Insights from each completed project are carried forward. Concrete mix design, waterproofing detailing, thermal break specification, and construction staging have all been refined through successive aquatic centre commissions.
